How does Word & the Wild work?

Starting in January, a circle of friends will begin a one-year adventure to read the entire Bible.
We are going to use a chronological plan to read, which means we will travel through the Bible in story order from beginning to end.

We will all use the same copy of the Bible that's arranged in story order in a fresh, readable translation. When you join the Word & the Wild PLUS community, I'll send you a link to purchase your copy of this inexpensive Bible.

There will be a weekly readers’ guide podcast that’s free to everyone. Those who become members of Word & the Wild PLUS gain access to an interactive online community with bonus content like livestreams, live Q&As, and resources to enrich your journey and make it fun.

How do I join the adventure?

First thing to do is pick a membership plan and become a member. I'll send you an invite to our private, safe online community we call THE WILD. A few clicks, and you're all set.

I'll also send you the link find the chronological Bible we all use. You'll want your own copy. It lays out each day's reading. It can be had for less than $20 on Amazon.

Who are you, Owen?

I’m your host and guide for this one year Bible adventure I’m calling Word & the Wild.

This year of reading and talking about the Bible with a circle of friends brings together a number of my passions.

For one thing, the Bible has shaped my life. I love to read it, talk about it, and teach it. My background includes a couple of Master’s degrees from Dallas Theological Seminary. I’ve learned from and been mentored by some world-class Bible teachers. I’ve also studied how adults learn and how to make big ideas stick.

Another part of my life has been about telling stories. I’ve worked as a radio and TV producer and presenter. My favorite gigs were in sports. So, I have a fun side, love talking with people, and have a bunch of experience with creating media content.

I’ve also been a pastor at some big churches. That work has taken me in front of crowds and all over the world. But my favorite thing is to gather up simple circles of interesting friends, throw the Bible and life into the conversation, and see where it takes us.

So, Word & the Wild takes my fun side, my nerdy Bible side, my tech side, my pastor side, and my curious social side and pulls it all together into one big, fun adventure.

Is Word & the Wild a lot of teaching and devotionals?

No. Word & the Wild is not Bible teaching. It's Bible exploration. You read. You understand. You decide what to do with what you discover.

What makes Word & the Wild different is that it is not a daily drip of pre-packaged "recaps" and devotionals.

While I do have two graduate degrees from Dallas Theological Seminary, Word & the Wild is not a collection of "lessons," "devotionals," or "sermons."

Our community is a circle of friends where no honest question is a dumb question. I believe that the Bible speaks on its own. I'm simply a guide by your side to help you understand and appreciate what you see on the adventure.

Why are you doing Word & the Wild?

I’ve been a guide to people through the story of the Bible in groups for years. One of my motivations for Word & the Wild is that I’ve seen time spent with the Bible over the course of a year change my friends' lives.

That change happens in a gentle way as the story the Bible tells soaks in.

That's why I've created Word & the Wild and I want to welcome you in to the adventure.

The entire Word & the Wild project is a non-profit endeavor of a 501c(3) called LineHouse Community Network. Word & the Wild Memberships cover the costs of the platform and supplies.

It's not a big, fancy organization. It grows out of the joy I find in making friends and helping them read and understand the Bible for themselves.

What Bible do you use?

We use the One Year Chronological Bible in the New Living Translation. The NLT is a fresh, accurate, readable translation. The chronological format splits the Bible into daily readings that put the words of the Bible in story order.

When you join Word & the Wild PLUS, I will give you all the info on what Bible to purchase and where to find it. It's about $20 on Amazon and other online retailers.
